On a diversified, year-round, organic operation like Sassafras Creek Farm, there is a lot to learn! For this field day, we’ll explore a range of topics with veteran farmer David Paulk who, along with his wife, Jennifer, owns Sassafras Creek Organic Farm. Also joining the conversation for science-informed insights into soil amendments and management approaches is Daniel Sweeney, Senior Crop Advisor for Seven Springs Farm Supply

Together, and with interaction from attendees, we’ll consider topics including:

  • Cover cropping, crop rotation and seed selection

  • High volume production of tricky crops like carrots and beets

  • Managing nutrients for year-round productivity

  • Challenges from extreme weather

  • Equipment to maximize efficiencies

  • And more!

This event is FREE, registration required. Dress for the weather with shoes appropriate for field walking. Registration is required. We look forward to seeing you there!

Sassafras Creek Farm - David Paulk

Sassafras Creek Farm is a four-season USDA Certified Organic vegetable farm in St. Mary's County, Maryland, located in Leonardtown, 60 miles south of Washington, D.C. The farm grew from David & Jennifer Paulk's love of growing vegetables.

Since 2011, they’ve grown from a large home garden to a small market farm. For David, the farm is a second career after a long service in the Navy. David and Jennifer saw market farming as an opportunity to be self-employed and enjoy the outdoors, the camaraderie of like-minded farmers, and help build a healthier, more sustainable local food system. David enjoys studying farming techniques, trying new vegetable varieties, and teaching others about small scale vegetable farming.

Daniel Sweeney - Seven Springs Farm Supply

Daniel is the Senior Crop Adviser at Seven Springs Farm Supply, a role he has held for the past six years. Prior to joining Seven Springs, Daniel was a commercial grower with over 500 acres of high-value specialty crops under his management.  His areas of focus are soils, agronomy and IPM, with a concentration in organic production.

Seven Springs is an independent farm supply company focused on supporting growers with quality advising and a comprehensive line of approved-for-organic fertilizers, pest controls, potting mixes and seed.
