Join the Million Acre Challenge on Wednesday, January 10th with the return of Soil Health to Go, their popular lunch and learn series. To kick off the new year, they’ll talk with Jay Baxter, a fourth-generation farmer, who owns and operates Baxter Farms Inc. in Georgetown, Delaware. Jay, with support from his sister and nonagenarian grandmother, farms over 2,000 acres of corn, soybeans, wheat, sweet corn, and lima beans.

A long-time practitioner of no-till and cover cropping, Jay has continued to innovate his soil health management systems by including multi-species covers, air-seeding, and planting green. He is always looking for new or more efficient methods of farming and sees his dedication to soil health as a generational imperative begun by his ancestors.

Jay credits the changes he’s made on his farm for soil that is now more productive and resilient, the result of a long term commitment to management decisions that prioritize soil health. And he’s seen positive economic impacts as well.

“Our number one resource is our soil.” he says. “I want to pass this farm on to my children and their children, so it’s important for us to take care of it in a way that makes that more likely.”
