Want to learn more about pasture management from one of the region’s veteran farmers? Join the Million Acre Challenge on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, 10:00 am - 1:00 pm. Bob Miller, owner operator of Nice Farms Creamery on Maryland's Eastern Shore, will provide a farm tour and discussion of his operation, including rotational grazing and innovative strategies for extending forage, like seeding annuals into pasture.

Bob grew up in a forward-thinking dairy farming family who, in the 1980s, shifted their operation to make grazing a priority. Carrying on in that tradition, Bob now stewards a herd of forty A2A2 Jersey cows on 200 acres in Federalsburg, Maryland. His regenerative farming journey has led him to value the importance of treating the soil as a living ecosystem. Bob sees his role as support staff for the soil and cows. Intent on letting cows be cows, he relies almost exclusively on his 120 acres of permanent pasture to feed his herd. Since 2009, Nice Farms Creamery has produced whole milk, chocolate milk, yogurt, skim milk, pastured butter, seasonal egg nog, and old-fashioned ice cream for sale at regional grocery stores, farmers markets, and through home-deliveries.

Bob and his team are committed to making delicious dairy products while continuing to protect the soil and, ultimately, the Chesapeake Bay. While this field day will not include a tour of the creamery, Bob will be happy to answer questions about that part of the operation as we go along.

Supporting this event, with information about conservation funding opportunities and technical support is Caroline County Soil Conservation Planner, Missy Saathoff.
