Cut Flower Production at Masterpiece Flower Farm (25 Jun 2026)

Join Future Harvest for a field day at Masterpiece Flower Farm in Whaleyville, Maryland with flower farmer Crystal Giesey. Crystal grows a vibrant diversity of cut flowers, vegetables, herbs, and berries on her farm, sharing the beauty and abundance of seasonal growing with her local community. Her handcrafted flower arrangements can be found at her roadside stand and local farmers markets, and she also hosts an annual plant sale each spring.

During this field day, participants will tour the farm, learn about Crystal’s growing practices and business model, and hear about the realities of operating a diversified small farm centered around flowers and community connection. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore seasonal production, roadside marketing, local sales, and the role of flowers in creating a sustainable and meaningful farm business.

Whether you are a grower, gardener, or simply curious about small-scale flower farming, this gathering offers a chance to connect, learn, and be inspired by the beauty and resilience of local agriculture.

Practical Realities of Building a Certified Organic Regenerative Farm From the Ground Up (25 Jun 2026)

Join Future Harvest at Harden Family Farms in Westminster Maryland this June for an afternoon with and Sharon & Dave Harden. We'll tour their operation and learn the decision-making processes behind infrastructure investments and product offerings. We'll close with refreshments, heavy appetizers, and an informal Q&A.

Harden Family Farms is a small but growing USDA-certified organic regenerative farm in Westminster, Maryland. The farm sits on 22 acres of rolling farmland in Carroll County and has been undergoing an intentional transition toward regenerative and community-focused agriculture.

Participants will see and discuss several aspects of the operation, including:

USDA-certified organic production with a focus on soil health and regenerative practices

Biochar soil amendments and organic fertility strategies using mushroom compost and other inputs

High-tunnel production systems used for diversified vegetables, herbs, and flowers

Small-scale value-added production, including teas, dried herbs, and farm-crafted products made from farm ingredients

Integrated livestock systems, including laying hens and livestock guardian dogs

Pollinator-friendly plantings and herb production

Direct-to-consumer marketing, including two farmers markets, a farm stand, and on-farm events

Farm diversification, including a historic bank barn renovated for farm retail and artisan production

Beyond the production practices themselves, Harden Family Farms places a strong emphasis on community engagement and local food access. The farm regularly donates produce to organizations such as the Westminster Rescue Mission and the Maryland Food Hub, and hosts seasonal farm gatherings that bring together local farmers, artisans, and families. Building a resilient local food community is central to what Harden Family Farms does.

Saturday, July 11th at 4:00pm - Join Future Harvest just outside the historic town of The Plains, Virginia, at the Kinloch Farm Store, to learn how the farm and its offerings have evolved over decades and most recently, with the Farm Store store's opening in 2022.

The event will be hosted on the Archwood parcel of Kinloch Farm, a historic steeplechase stable and the site of the long running Archwood Green Barns Farmer’s Market. On the property the owners, the Currier Family, have supported for more than 25 years, the team at Kinloch Farm has built a brick-and-mortar store retailing a complete inventory of cuts of 100% grassfed, grass finished beef as well as products carefully curated with local partnerships.

Senior Sales and Marketing Manager Bobby Doane and Farm Store Manager Heidi Chaya will share their experiences with the rising usage of tallow and bone broth, how their iconic leather is made, and successes in ready-to-eat meals, snack sticks, all-beef hot dogs and more. Her experience has cultivated a deep perspective that allows her to educate customers about the benefits of 100% grassfed beef for their health, animal health, and ecosystem health.

Todd Meade has been at Kinloch Farm since 2007. With a background in cattle work, he possesses a broad knowledge base of animal health, grazing management, and leadership skills. This makes him a much loved, valued, and respected member of our team.

Bobby Doane has been at Kinloch Farm since 2022. Prior to the company’s acquisition, he worked for a well-known grocery chain for 10 years in a variety of roles, both on the East Coast and West Coast, before setting roots and starting a family in nearby Marshall, Virginia.
